Why are fire doors so important?
Fire doors are essential in keeping your buildings and anyone within them safe.
Made from fire-resistant materials, a fire door intends to contain fires to specific compartments within your building. The location of fire doors needs to be carefully considered, doors should be placed strategically to keep escape routes clear in the event of a fire.

There are different types of fire doors, with a wide variety in the level of protection they provide, though primarily they come in the following ratings:
- FD30 (30 minutes) and FD60 (60 minutes) tend to be used in residential and commercial settings
- FD90 and FD120 doors offer higher protection for industrial and high-risk areas such as hospitals and schools.
- Other types include glazed fire doors, double fire doors, acoustic fire doors and steel fire doors, each ideal for specific uses.
Using the right type of fire door for the right setting is crucial - if you’re unsure what your buildings’ fire door requirements are, our team can advise on the best fit for purpose solution.

Need fire door installation?
Contact UsInstallers should be trained in fire door fitting, not just general joinery. UK schemes such as FIRAS certify competence in BS 8214 methods, use of approved components and legal compliance. Choosing a certified installer confirms the work will meet building regulations.
A fire door set includes the leaf, compatible frame, intumescent and smoke seals, approved hinges and closers, and any tested glazing. All parts must be from the tested specification. Replacing components with unapproved alternatives can compromise performance and breach regulations.
Installation must follow Approved Document B for placement and fire rating, BS 8214 for fitting, and BS EN 1634-1 for tested performance. The entire doorset, including frame and hardware, must match the manufacturer’s tested specification. Any deviation from certified instructions can make the installation non-compliant and unsafe.
The FD rating shows the door’s proven resistance time in a standard fire test. FD30 holds back fire and smoke for at least 30 minutes, FD60 for at least 60. Ratings apply to the complete tested doorset, not individual parts.
Look for a permanent certification mark or label on the top or side of the door. This should match the manufacturer’s records and test data. Certification confirms the door was tested and approved as installed.
Under the Building Safety Act 2022, higher-risk buildings must retain a secure, digital, up-to-date record of all design, construction and fire protection throughout the building’s life. This “golden thread” supports safe management and makes future works easier to update without disrupting your buildings passive fire protection.
We track and report on progress using two different platforms primarily. Onetrace gives you a live, photo‑verified log of every fire door inspection, repair and installation, while Bolster maps large‑scale fire‑stopping works to digital floor plans with QR‑coded evidence. Together they provide an auditable Golden Thread of information, so you can prove compliance instantly, track progress and plan future works with confidence.
FIRAS is an independent, third‑party certification scheme that audits both our onsite workmanship and quality‑management systems for passive fire protection. Holding FIRAS certification proves our staff are competent, our processes are robust, and every project receives external quality checks.
The Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) is a world‑renowned approvals body that sets performance standards for fire protection products and installers. LPS 1531 relates to the installation and maintenance of passive fire protection systems. Certification confirms our work meets these internationally recognised benchmarks.
Third‑party accreditation means an external body routinely verifies our competence, processes, and completed work. This impartial oversight provides objective evidence that your fire protection solution performs as claimed and complies with the latest regulations.
