Enhancing Fire Safety at a Leading Medical School

One of the largest medical schools in the UK needed help assessing and repairing its passive fire protection.
We were appointed to support the School of Medicine in identifying and resolving key fire safety risks within the building’s infrastructure, particularly in service voids, basements and high-traffic areas such as stairwells and lift lobbies.
The challenge
With a facility dating back to the 1970s and continuously adapted over time, the School of Medicine required a detailed assessment of hidden fire risks within its structure.
Service voids and basement areas in particular presented limited access and poor visibility, raising concerns about potential gaps in passive fire protection.
In addition, existing fire doors in stairwells and lift lobbies no longer met modern compliance standards, so upgrading these essential barriers was critical to maintaining compartmentation and ensuring safe evacuation routes.
Our approach
We began with a comprehensive survey of the building’s service voids and basement areas. This enabled our team to map out penetrations, identify fire-stopping failures, and understand the full scope of remedial works required.
Following the survey phase, we were appointed to:
- Install compliant fire-stopping and sealing systems to service penetrations and voids
- Replace non-compliant fire doors in stairwells and lift lobbies with certified FD-rated doorsets
- Ensure continuity of fire resistance across all treated zones in line with the latest British Standards and university protocols
The outcome
Our work has significantly strengthened the passive fire protection strategy within the school.
By addressing fire-stopping deficiencies and replacing high-risk doors, we’ve helped the university reduce potential risks and move forward with confidence in their compliance obligations.
All works were scheduled with minimal disruption to the school’s operations, with clear communication and coordination throughout.
